This week James and I went on our 3rd annual camping trip. The past two years we camped at Huntsville State Park - an hour North of Houston. This year we drove 4 hours to Colorado Bend State Park in the Hill Country.
The most popular destination at Colorado Bend is Gorman Falls. There is a 1.5 mile hike to get to the falls with much of it up the mountains/hills, so I was very concerned with James wearing out and me having to carry him 1.5 miles back out, but he was incredible. Not only did he hike the whole way, but he ran most of it and explored the whole way.
One couple commented that he hiked like a mountain goat, as he was jumping over rocks. On top of the 1.5 mile hike in, James also climbed up a cliff/mountain and did some exploring in a some small cave crevices.
After hiking back from Gorman Falls, James and I went to finish readying the camp for the night. We made up various games to play around camp, the best being "canteen football" where we would kick the canteen to each other and then try to tackle each other - James may have some potential as a kick return specialist. At night, our traditions are to cook hotdogs and beans, eat smores and lots of doritos. Probably James' favorite activity is telling scary stories by the fire
Going in to the trip the weather report called for a low of 40, but we had an unexpected weather twist. The temp dropped to 33 through the night and early morning. It is a good thing we had tons of thermal gear, although James wasn't even fazed. The next day, we woke up and went fishing. James loves fishing and it is something I plan to do much more with him. He did not want to quit fishing after a couple hours, but it was a bad day on the River as no one around us was catching anything either. We both had a lot of fun and we proved the old saying "a bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office."
The highlight of the trip for James was the cave tour. This was the big reason that I chose this park - they do cave tours and have numerous caves. James was the perfect age for the tour. He answered numerous questions that the tour guide asked and was a big hit with everyone on the tour - he was the only kid on the tour and everyone was loving him.
At the end of the trip I asked James what his favorite part of the trip was to which he replied "spending time with you", which was the best thing I could have heard. Sarah always says after these trips that I bring the happiest (and dirtiest) boy home with me. I am already looking forward to next years trip.
